Clean Cube™ Air Purification Innovation


The Client

As COVID-19 heightened awareness around air quality, experienced businessman Thomas Lund recognized an opportunity: While effective commercial air purification solutions existed, they required complex HVAC installation. This insight led him to develop Clean Cube™, a mobile air purification system using Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization (NPBI™) technology. The innovative solution reduces viruses, pollution, and harmful volatile chemicals from the air without requiring permanent installation.

The Challenge

While Lund had the vision and an initial prototype constructed from aluminum angles and vinyl pressboard, he needed a reputable contract manufacturer to refine and build it. The prototype was large and heavy — far from the sleek, compact unit he envisioned. Through a business connection, Lund was introduced to Mathison Manufacturing, who immediately recognized the project's potential, particularly given their own active pursuit of COVID-19 mitigation efforts during the pandemic.

The Solution

Design and Engineering Improvements

Mathison Manufacturing engaged Lund throughout the development process, combining his meticulous attention to detail with their manufacturing expertise to:

  • Transform Clean Cube™ into a visually appealing, compact unit made of high-grade metal

  • Recommend significant improvements, including a magnetized filter drawer for easier maintenance

  • Engineer innovative solutions to meet UL certification requirements without costly redesigns

Manufacturing Process Optimization

The Clean Cube™ was engineered with a design-for-manufacturability (DFM) approach, streamlining production and assembly processes while ensuring scalability as demand grows. Each iteration brought incremental enhancements to both performance and functionality through Mathison’s collaborative approach.

Turnkey Fulfillment Solution

Mathison Manufacturing served as a comprehensive fulfillment center, managing:

  • Raw material laser cutting, deburring, forming and welding

  • Finishing processes, coordinated with internal vendors

  • Screen printing for logo application on in-house-manufactured brushed stainless steel nameplates

  • Complete assembly and packaging

  • Warehousing and direct shipment to Clean Entrance Systems’ customer

The result was a market-ready Clean Cube™ that could be produced efficiently, cost-effectively and with outstanding quality and safety standards. The 750 CFM air purifier, equipped with NPBI™ and a MERV 13 filter tray, treats up to 1,500 square feet of space, with adjustable louvers providing indirect airflow for ideal ventilation patterns.
